Ray Campbell, Student Project Engineer<br>Beau Durland, Student Geotechnical Engineer<br>Duy Lai, Student Design Engineer<br>Jake Livingston, Student Design Engineer<br>Wade Kamkoff, EIT, Student Environmental Engineer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mentor: <\/strong>Rys Miranda, P.E., Department of Natural Resources<br><strong>Advisor:<\/strong> Dr. Joey Yang, PhD, P.E., UAA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Client: <\/strong>Carl Madson, E.I.T., U.S. Forrest Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Used as a migration route for Alaska Natives<\/li><li>The Portage Pass Trail is two mile long hike which provides views of both Portage Glacier and Passage Canal<\/li><li>This trail is used mainly during the summer months.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purpose:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of this project is to develop the primitive trailhead to an improved Level of Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Existing Conditions caused by over usage:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Road and Parking area in poor condition<\/li><li>Insufficient parking capacity<\/li><li>Lacks sanitation facilities and amenities<\/li><li>Failing double culvert crossing<\/li><li>Has an unsafe non-standard railroad crossing<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Design Considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final Design shall improve and expand visitor facilities by providing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Safer railroad crossing<\/li><li>Parking to accommodate 55 vehicles and 7 oversized<\/li><li>Double Vaulted Toilet<\/li><li>Picnic Pavilion<\/li><li>Trailhead featuring interpretive signs<\/li><li>Removal of the existing culvert stream crossing<\/li><li>Installation of Pedestrian Bridge<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scope of Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Trailhead Accommodations<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Parking Lot<br>55 parking spaces<br>7 over-sized vehicle spaces<br>expansion room<\/li><li>Visitor Facilities<br>Double Vaulted Toilet<br>Pavilion with 2 picnic tables<br>interpretive signage<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>2.
